In the late 1990s, Hal wrote frequent guest editorials for "The Atlanta Journal-Constitution." For five years, he reviewed southern fiction for a regular column (“Reading the South”). He has been at work on this baseball memoir since the summer of 2004, when the events in the book took place. He lives outside the city of Decatur with his wife, Alicia, a librarian at Fernbank Elementary.
